Character Name: Link

Canon: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask
Canon Point: Post Majora’s Mask
Character Information:

This Link (aka the Hero of Time) appears in two (technically three but not important here) Zelda Titles. Here are some canon summaries for the first two, and then I’ll give my own summary cause I love talking about Zelda.

http://zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time#Story
http://zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Majora's_Mask#Story

Link never knew his mother or father. As a baby he was left in the Kokiri Forest shortly before his parents died. He was taken in and raised by the Kokiri, a race of immortal forest children living isolated from the rest of Hyrule on the edge of the Lost Woods. It’s implied that only his friend Saria is aware that he is not a Kokiri, including himself. As such, when the Deku Tree calls for Link’s aid and reveals to him the secrets of his past and that he’s the only one who can save Hyrule from impending doom, he’s a bit shocked. Still he grits his teeth and heads out of the forest and into a whirlwind of brilliant game design and plot execution.

Along his journey he does a lot of jumping back and forth between his ‘adult’ 17 year old self and his 10 year old child self. Eventually however, as an “adult” he defeats Ganondorf. Great. Then Zelda sends him back in time permanently to let him live out his missing childhood. This obviously causes a couple problems. Because this kind of time travel is different from the kind earlier in the game (and a sequel was coming up) it winds up depowering Link and robbing him of all the cool ass shit he found while he was defeating minions of Ganon. Secondly, he’s now right back to square one as far as Ganondorf being about to betray the crown and plunge the world into an era of darkness. Luckily, being armed with knowledge of future events proves enough to allow Zelda to warn her father about Ganondorf’s plot, and he gets executed, (ineffectively…he’ll come back eventually).

Anyway Link has saved Hyrule in not one but TWO timelines now, and is well ready for some good old rest and relaxation, right? Wrong. Home boy be mad restless. Oh and also his only constant companion through his multiple ordeals abandoned him once the quest was over and that was pretty shitty. So he goes to look for her. CUE TERMINA.

Termina is a pretty whacked out messed up place on it’s own, and Majora reigning chaos down upon everything didn’t exactly help. But Link being the stand up guy that he is, and also being kind of strong armed into the situation by magical shenanigans and a fairy who is FAR INFIRIOR to Navi, he puts himself through Madoka style time travel repeat cycles to finally bring down Skullkid and prevent Termina from being one big crater. Notably I’ll be taking him from someone who played the game 100% through, meaning that the in the final battle with Majora, Link had the Fierce Deity mask. He obviously won’t have it in game, but he will remember the feeling of overwhelming righteously angry urges and struggling with keeping his own free will. After all that he quietly slinks back to Hyrule, and I’ll be taking him from not too long after he returns.

Personality:

Every Kokiri has a fairy companion, but since Link is Hylian, he grew up without one. This one difference was enough to set him apart from the children around him. He still had friends and support, but for the first 10 years of his life he was ‘the boy without a fairy’. This ostracization definitely had an impact on him, both fueling his need to prove himself, and turning him into something of a loner. He has people he’s close to and clearly cares about them a lot but likely struggles with larger groups or more unfamiliar social interactions. He’s fairly withdrawn, and while it is canonical that Link can talk, he certainly doesn’t do much of it. He simply doesn’t feel the need to voice his opinion very often.

When the Deku tree calls for his aid a lot of things change for Link very quickly. Now with a fairy companion he finally has the chance to fit in with his friends, but almost immediately must instead charge headfirst into an new world to save everyone. He copes surprisingly well, and proves himself to be a dedicated, resilient, and resourceful hero over the course of his journey. He’s saddled with more and more outrageous responsibility as the events tick on, but each time he takes it in stride and more than lives up to the challenge. However being thrust into such a combative role so quickly did lead him to somewhat of an unhealthy way to deal with aggression. He’s got a fairly long fuse, but there’s one motherload of a bomb at the end of it.

After defeating Ganondorf however, things take a turn for the worse. Back in his original time, Link had to face the fact that no one remembered who he was or what he had done. He was never really looking for the praise and fame that came with being a hero, so the lack of recognition isn’t strictly what bothers him, but all the friendships he had created along the way were effectively erased. For a kid with the tendency to isolate himself, being back to the unfamiliar stage of a friendship was pretty devastating. And to make it all worse, the one person who DID know everything he had experienced and had been by his side the whole time took off without a trace once the deed was done. Feeling disheartened and even abandoned, Link left behind the world he had saved to go looking for her.

Which leads him into Termina. Once again, Link unrelentingly threw himself into his task, unwilling to let people who needed him down. He had the ability to help them, so he would. Unfortunately due to the nature of the three day time limit, he could only help so many of them. There are a lot of very sad, troubling, even disturbing things happening to or around characters over the course of the three days, and technically Link saves them all. However, he has to keep undoing all his work. Not only is it wearing to see the people he had helped and saved back to square one with all their problems, but on the final three day cycle there simply isn’t time to do everything. He has to fight Majora, defeat him, and leave whatever loose ends left over undone. This frustrates and disheartens him greatly, and makes all his accomplishments feel cheapened. He’s got the same feeling of disconnect from reality and the people around him that he did at the end of OoT, but tenfold now.

Furthermore, even with Ganondorf defeated, Link immediately stumbled into yet another ‘world in peril’ situation, arguably a much worse one than he originally faced in Ocarina of Time. This would make anyone uneasy, but for someone as determined and vigilant as Link, it puts him on high alert, and keeps him from fully enjoying the peace he’s helped created. Ultimately this leaves Link conflicted, regretful, and worried. At the time of entering the game Link will have had a little bit of time to relax and even start enjoying being a kid again, but being thrown back into a place where people are in danger will immediately put him into Serious Hero Mode. Ultimately Link is a well meaning kid who puts too much weight on his own shoulders. He's not naive but he is fairly innocent, and rigid in his convictions to do the right thing.
